How to Get Involved
We encourage you to get involved, learn new skills and make real change.
Here are some of the ways you can participate:
Stewards are the union’s primary workplace volunteer representatives. They are union members who are elected by their co-workers and fellow members to assist in providing information about the union, collective agreements, and how to resolve workplace problems.
Volunteer Organizers are local members who work as organizers to help build the collective power of the union by organizing unorganized workers. VOs learn valuable communication and organization skills, and work closely with other members and union staff in campaigns.
Local union committees are made up of members who are actively interested in the affairs of the union and are willing to commit some of their time to their respective committees. Union committees may include: community engagement, bargaining, education, political action, health and safety (incooperation with management), and organizing. If there isn’t a committee already in place, consult withyour coworkers and Union Representative to get it started!
Local Officers are elected by their co-workers to represent the concerns of union members. Such positions could include: Local President, Secretary-Treasurer, Steward, Council Delegate, and Unit Chair.
Attend your local union meetings and events. At local union meetings, Workers United members are updated about issues that effect their individual workplace and the overall union. Attending local union meetings helps increase communication between different departments, shifts and workplaces, and ensures all members have the chance to voice concerns and ideas.
